Michigan lawmakers feast and fly for free, but the system for tracking freebies is broken

Lobbyists lavished more than $6 million in free meals and trips on Michigan lawmakers between 2001-2023, but flaws in the system make it impossible to determine how much state officials really got.

Eye On Michigan reporters spent months contacting lawmakers to ask about the free trips and meals they took from lobbyists. We called them at their offices, at their home and on their cell phones. We sent them emails. In some cases, we asked spokespeople for the Michigan House and Senate to arrange interviews with them. We even spoke to their parents and spouses, asking them to have their loved one return our calls. Only a handful of lawmakers spoke with us, and in most of those cases they declined to discuss the freebies they took before hanging up on us. Four of the Top 25 Takers are still in office. So we went to the Capitol to give them one more chance to answer questions. This video tells the whole story.
