At our November 2025 workshop, 92 percent of the high school students surveyed said they would recommend our workshop! Of the volunteers who responded, 100 percent say they’ll come back again. Why? Because they know the power their presence and expertise have on guiding students to college and careers in journalism.
We look forward to our high school students joining the ranks of our college reporters who earned a national award and universal praise for their first major investigative report, which was featured in news outlets throughout Michigan. We’ll be breaking news again soon when their second investigation is published this summer. Our results speak for themselves: Every EOM college reporter has landed a job in journalism after graduation.
Lobbyists lavished more than $6 million in free meals and trips on Michigan lawmakers between 2001-2023, but flaws in the system make it impossible to determine how much state officials really got.
Eye On Michigan is a student investigative reporting program based in Detroit and East Lansing. Our mission is to recruit and train the next generation of watchdog reporters, provide high-quality investigations to Michigan news organizations at no charge and to increase diversity in investigative reporting by engaging and inspiring high school students in under-served communities.
Eye On Michigan reporters spent months contacting lawmakers to ask about the free trips and meals they took from lobbyists. Four of the Top 25 Takers are still in office. So we went to the Capitol to give them one more chance to answer questions. This video tells the whole story.
